Poetry Northwest is seeking to fill the following roles:

Garrett Hongo Internship for Young Editors of Color

Position Description

Poetry Northwest is currently seeking two versatile, dedicated, and independent interns to support the editorial team.

Interns will work directly with multiple Poetry Northwest staff members to prepare an issue of the magazine for publication. Internship projects may include publicity, marketing, copyediting, typesetting, reading submissions, and additional responsibilities related to web features. Each intern will be responsible for completing weekly tasks, attending meetings with staff as-needed, and presenting a summary of their work on a monthly basis.

Requirements

The internship term is January 27 – May 23, 2025. This remote position requires a commitment of no more than five hours per week.

This role is for those excited to learn about what goes into creating a literary magazine, and eager to support a creative, engaged team of literary arts professionals. Required skills include reliability, strong written and verbal communication, and a willingness to learn on the job. Required materials include access to a computer, internet, and various virtual meeting applications.

Eligibility

The internship is for people between the ages of 18-22. Applicants must self-identify as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic or Latine, MENA, Asian, Pacific Islander, or a person of color. There are no education requirements for the internship, and applicants need not be enrolled in school.

Compensation

Interns will receive a stipend of $400 to be provided in a single payment at the completion of the successful internship.

How to Apply

Submit a resume and a brief letter of interest to Senior Editor, Helene Achanzar, over Submittable. Letters should outline the applicant’s interest in and/or experience with editorial work, particularly as it relates to poetry. As prior experience isn’t a prerequisite, applicants are also encouraged to include any relevant skills that aren’t tied to editorial work. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2024. Questions may be directed to Helene Achanzar at helene@poetrynw.org.

Rolling Applications

Although Poetry Northwest does not currently have any open positions beyond the internship, we review applications on a rolling basis.
